San Joaquin Pipeline System is San Francisco Public Utilities Commission's water transmission facility that spans nearly 48 miles.

Client: San Francisco Public Utilties Commission
Location: San Joaquin Valley, CA

AGS is a Joint Venture partner to provide design and engineering support services including design of the San Joaquin River crossing and liquefaction mitigation design services. The firm is presently performing structural, civil, and geotechnical engineering project tasks.

Structural engineering responsibilities for the California Aqueduct overcrossing include evaluation of pipeline thickness and value engineering of approximately 10.8 miles of 92-inch inside diameter welded steel pipeline and the design of a structural steel truss bridge (166 feet long) to support the aerial pipe overcrossing the aqueduct. Specific structural engineering tasks include response spectrum dynamic analysis and design of the supporting steel truss bridge, the analysis and design of the supporting concrete abutments and piles, and the design and analysis of the 92-inch welded steel pipeline.

Civil engineering responsibilities include miscellaneous design of site grading, drainage, utility relocation, and fencing for the antiterrorism blast protection structure at Oakdale Portal and for the California Aqueduct overcrossing.

Geotechnical engineering scope of work has included investigation and site characterization, including explorations of the subsurface conditions for design of general pipeline trenching and construction; trenchless crossings; and the California Aqueduct overcrossing. Subsurface exploration is also designed to assess the constraints of any potential liquefaction, groundwater conditions, and any potential ground instabilities. AGS geotechnical investigation and site characterization data report [GDR] site characterization interpretive report [GIR], and the baseline report [GBR], establish subsurface conditions for a proposed fourth pipeline and associated crossover facilities and provide data for construction of a new western segment of approximately 10.8 miles of 92-inch inside diameter welded steel pipeline and a new Crossover Facility which would tie the existing three pipelines into the new fourth pipeline.
