The Sunol Valley Water Treatment Plant [SVWTP] Improvements Project has been a critical project in the SFPUC’s 10 year Capital Improvements Program [CIP] and one of the largest and most complex projects undertaken by the Utilities Engineering Bureau in recent years.

Client: San Francisco Public Utilities Commission
Location: Sunol Valley, CA

The project included siting and preliminary design of a new WTP and treated water storage reservoir [TWR]. A total of four alternative sites within the Sunol Valley were proposed for the location of a new WTP or reservoir, or both. The sites were located in close proximity of Calaveras and Sinbad faults. Extensive trenching was performed to assess fault rupture hazard. The West Portal Site was selected as the preferred alternative. AGS conducted various geotechnical investigations at these sites during 1991, 1994, 1999, and 2000.
