The Runway Safety Area (RSA) project was funded through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program [AIP] for capital improvements at airports from taxes received from passenger tickets and aviation fuel. A $13 million AIP grant to Oakland International Airport provided for several airfield capital improvement projects, two security-related projects, and a sound insulation project.
As a major subconsultant to URS, AGS performed various task orders for the final design and construction management of RSA improvements for Runways 11-29, 9R-27L, 9L-27R, and 15-33. The RSA improvement project was funded by an Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The first phase of a geotechnical study for both North Field and South Field included extensive field exploration and laboratory testing; and the development of geotechnical conclusions and recommendations related to geoseismic hazards, seismic design considerations, site improvements, earthwork, pavement design, and construction monitoring for the proposed project.
In addition, AGS also performed the second phase geotechnical study for the North Field that included extensive field exploration, laboratory testing, and site characterization. The purpose of the study was to explore and evaluate subsurface conditions and develop final site-specific geotechnical conclusions and recommendations for soil improvements, pavements, and other project elements.
